If you are looking to remodel your driveway, it can be important to know what options are available to you. There are 4 main types of finished driveways: asphalt, pavers, concrete, and gravel. Below, we will discuss the pros and cons of each material type so you can make an informed decision for your home.

Asphalt Driveways

Asphalt is a common driveway material that holds up well in environments with varied weather. It is affordable and relatively fast to install. It also holds up well to salt during winter weather.  Maintenance can include regular sealing for UV and water protection. Asphalt can also get hot during the summer, as its dark color draws in heat.

Concrete Driveway Material

Concrete is the most common choice for suburban driveways. It is durable and long-lasting. With proper care, a concrete driveway can last up to 30 years or more. The upfront cost for concrete installation will be higher than asphalt. Concrete can be customized with different colors and aggregates to more closely match your home’s aesthetics. Concrete can, unfortunately, stain if not properly treated and sealed. This can sometimes be a problem if your car has an oil leak, for example.

Pavers

Pavers come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. With proper installation and care, they can last as long as concrete. Because pavers are installed as blocks or bricks, they can be individually replaced if needed. They have the highest upfront installation cost, but are the most cost-effective in the long run. Some paver installation methods can make them more effective with drainage than asphalt or concrete.

Gravel Driveways

Gravel is a great option for longer driveways and areas where drainage is a concern. Its best feature is its drainage. Gravel tends to lend a rustic look and feel to a home, as well. It is incredibly cost-effective and easy to maintain. The main drawback is that gravel can make snow removal difficult.

Professional Driveway Installation

If you are looking to begin a driveway renovation project, consult with a professional mason or paving specialist. This will help ensure that your driveway is properly installed and safely graded for your home. The proper slope, or grade, of your driveway can be vital to keeping your car in place as well as for proper water drainage.
