When renovating your garage, some homeowners may consider changing the type of door they have. There are 4 main types of doors, and each has their own sets of pros and cons. Below, we will discuss the different styles and which may be right for your home.

Sectional Garage Doors

Sectional doors are the most common garage door in the Staten Island area. The design consists of a series of large panels that connect with hinges. They slide up, usually using the ceiling space of the garage to save space. Sectional doors are adaptable to budgetary and energy needs. They are generally available in a wide array of sizes, styles, materials, and thicknesses. Some sectional models offer insulated options. These can be important for homeowners looking to improve their energy efficiency and save on heating bills. Insulated doors are especially important in areas with variable climates throughout the year, such as New York. Sectional doors are also generally very sturdy and secure. This style is most often automated, especially for heavier and sturdier doors.
Because of the way sectional doors slide up, they are not ideal for garages with particularly low ceilings, or abnormal shapes. While the sectional doors can be low-maintenance, they may require more lubrication over time than other door types.

Roll-Up Garage Doors

Roll-up doors are made of thin steel or aluminum sheets that roll up onto a coil above the doorway. It is a good space-saving option for smaller garages. Generally, the metal used is durable enough to last everyday wear and tear, as well as harsh weather conditions. Security-wise, the sturdy, interlocking metal sheets are very strong and resistant to tampering.
Roll-up doors tend to be higher-end for upfront installation costs compared to other styles. They offer limited insulation, so they are less popular for attached garages than other choices. Rather, they are more often utilized in commercial properties.

Counterbalance Doors

Counterbalance doors, also known as counterweight doors, are best for garages with limited overhead space. They utilize counterweights and pulleys to create a smooth and easy opening for your garage. Safety features may include anti-drop systems or emergency release mechanisms. Garages with low ceilings or limited space can benefit greatly from this door type.
Counterbalance doors generally offer less insulation, and are therefore less energy efficient. Installation of this style of garage door is also more complex, because of the pulley and weight systems.

Sliding Barn Doors

Sliding barn doors are much more popular for detached garages and workshops. They are generally heavy and manually operated, but there are mechanical options available. Sliding doors provide homes with a rustic style that isn’t found in the other styles. Generally, sliding doors offer less weather protection or insulation than other door types. Where sliding doors excel is in their space-saving. They won’t require overhead space or counterweight systems.
