It’s 2025, and with a new year comes a fresh start. This year, let’s put improving our home on our resolution list. Below, we will provide several projects homeowners can tackle to help reduce their energy, water, or gas bills in the new year.
Use Less Water Outside in the New Year
Water usage for the lawn and garden can have a major impact on your bill. There are several ways to reduce your lawn’s impact on your water bill. First, consider installing a rain barrel. While you can purchase rain barrels for your home, the city government will occasionally offer free giveaway programs that include rain barrel systems. Rain barrels can be useful for watering gardens and lawns without using municipal water. Next, consider planting drought-resistant plants. The NYC Parks Department offers a list of drought-tolerant native species for our area.
New Year, Smaller Energy Bill
There are many ways to lessen your electric bill in the new year. First, switch your lights to LED bulbs. These use less wattage to create the same level of brightness as traditional incandescent bulbs while producing less heat byproduct. Power strips for computers and other electronics can be turned off when not in use. This reduces ancillary electricity use, and can also protect your electronics in the event of a surge. Turn off lights when not in the room. Hang more clothes to dry, instead of relying on the dryer.
Air Conditioning and Heat Management
Your heat and AC unit can contribute heavily to your monthly bills. Turn off the AC when you aren’t home. Lower your heat to 55 degrees when you leave the home or go to sleep. Smart thermostats can help you track energy usage and control the thermostat while you are away. Consider having a thermal inspection of your walls and roof. Thermal imaging can identify drafts that may cause wasted energy. Fixing these drafts can keep your home better insulated. Resealing windows and doors can also reduce energy loss to drafts.
Reducing Water Use in the Home
Water usage in the home can also be made more efficient. First, only run the dishwasher when it’s full. Install a low-flow showerhead to reduce water use in the shower. When buying a new washing machine, look for models that have a load-size sensor. Lastly, if you need to replace your toilet, opt for a dual-flush model.
