Summer isn’t too far off. If you are planning on adding an in-ground pool to your backyard, now is a great time to start preparations. Starting in April can help ensure that your pool is ready for the Summer. In this article, we will discuss the 4 main types of in-ground pools for your backyard.
In-Ground Pool Types
There are 4 main types of materials used to design pools. Each has its pros and cons. They are concrete with plaster or aggregate, concrete with tile or stone, fiberglass, or vinyl.
Concrete with Plaster or Aggregate
Concrete becomes stronger when mixed with plaster or aggregates. This material mix is especially effective at producing pools of custom shapes and sizes. The material mix is incredibly durable. These pools are the most long-lasting of the 4 types, holding up to age and wear the best. However, they are the most costly for installation and maintenance. Maintenance or repairs are few and far between but will cost more than repairs to the other in-ground pool types we will discuss.
Concrete with Tile or Stone
In this style, concrete is used as a base for the pool and then set with tile or stone for a sturdy and decorative design. This creates a beautiful and classic-looking pool design. The main drawback for this type is maintenance. It can be difficult to repair or replace stones or tiles over time without them looking different. While these in-ground pools can be incredibly aesthetically pleasing, the upfront cost to build will be much higher than vinyl or fiberglass installations.
Fiberglass In-Ground Pools
Fiberglass pools require the least amount of installation time and the lowest maintenance costs. This is because fiberglass pools are preshaped in manufacturing. The fiberglass shell is installed into the ground. Sizes and shapes are limited by available mold options, but there is still a wide assortment to choose from. Models can also offer pre-built steps, benches, and other add-ons from the start. Fiberglass pool installations are quick and easy. Fiberglass pools have a slick coating that helps limit algae growth. The gel coating on fiberglass pools generally needs replacing every 10-15 years.
Vinyl Pools
Generally, vinyl pools require the least upfront costs for installation. Vinyl-lined pools are usually built with metal or plastic frames. These frames are pre-fabricated but can link together to build pools of virtually any size or shape. The bottom of the liner usually sits on a bed of sand. The main drawback of vinyl liners is that they deteriorate over time. With proper care, a quality liner can last 10-16 years or more.
